Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
What is ABA?
In a nutshell. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence and research-based therapeutic treatment that has been shown over time to be an effective way to modify behavior so as to improve the quality of life and independence of the child.
ABA therapy has been endorsed as a proven therapeutic treatment for children with autism by the Society for Developmental and Behavior Pediatrics (SDBP), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Autism Society of America (ASA), the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD), and the American Psychological Association (APA) among many others.
ABA is used to:
- Help individuals understand behaviors and how they are impacted by their environment.
- Increase positive behaviors and learn new skills.
- Decrease harmful or undesirable behaviors.
ABA is based on the understanding that all individuals are unique with different needs and challenges. As such, one-size-fits-all and cookie-cutter approaches are inappropriate. ABA treatments are tailored to the specific situation and environment of the child.
